Ruben Castillo: from pool finisher to owner
Ruben Castillo began his career in the pool plastering business in the early 1970s, working summer vacations. At the age of 22 he began working full time as a finisher with a couple of companies.
As a finisher, Ruben worked on hundreds of pools from the San Diego area to the San Fernando Valley — and every city in between:
- Sylmar
- Santa Barbara
- Malibu
- Bel Air
- West Hollywood
- Brentwood
- Beverly Hills
- Pasadena
- LAX
- Rancho Santa Fe
- La Jolla
- Encinitas
- Carlsbad
- Del Mar
- Point Loma
- El Cajon
- Lakeside
- Ramona
His primary job was finishing the interior of the pool. In those days that mostly meant white plaster, but in the more opulent neighborhoods such as Beverly Hills he began doing pools in different colors of plaster — sometimes experimenting with new colors because a more demanding clientele requested them. That is where black-bottom pools began to show up in people’s backyards.
